SPECIAL
EDUCATION
The Special Education Program helps about two hundred students who have been identified as having (SLD's) Specific Learning Disabilities meet the expectations of the Ontario secondary school curriculum. Both general and specific accommodations are outlined in each student's IEP (Individual Education Plan), which is distributed to each one of the student's teachers.
LSI (Learning Support Level I) is implemented through a GLE (General Learning Strategies) credit course. Using the content material from their other courses, students work with a special education teacher to strengthen academic and personal success. Students have the opportunity to take up to four GLE credits towards their diploma.
Any non-identified student, recommended by a Guidance Counsellor, may join a GLE class to earn a GLS 1O0 and/or GLS 4O0 credit. Non-identified students have the opportunity to earn up to two GLS credits towards their diploma.
LSII (Learning Support Level II) is implemented through the Curriculum Support Centre, room 110, opposite the Library. A support teacher is available throughout the day to provide assistance to students. There are also several networked computers for the students' convenience. One specific support teacher is assigned to each student in LSII. This teacher will initiate contact with the students periodically throughout the year, to offer assistance and advice. We encourage students to self-advocate, take responsibility for their own learning and to seek assistance whenever necessary.
The Contact Program is designed for students who demonstrate problems with classroom behaviour, attitudes towards school and/or teachers and peers. The main objectives of the program are to teach social skills and to assist students to implement problem-solving and conflict management strategies. It is delivered by the Behaviour Teachers and the Behavioural Teaching Assistant. Emotional support and monitoring of academic progress are an important part of the program.
The Physical Program provides physical and academic support for students with physical disabilities. It is delivered primarily by the Physical Teaching Assistant either in the students' classrooms or in the TA's office.
