This course furthers student’s understanding of basic
scientific concepts. Students will study matter, reproduction, applications
of electricity, and space exploration. The course relates science to technology,
society and the environment, and provides opportunities for students
to demonstrate inquiry and communication skills.

Concepts and
Connections
|
|
Unit 1: Introduction - Skills (14 hours)
|
This
unit provides an opportunity for the teacher to assess the current competence
of students in science inquiry, knowledge of the safe and appropriate
use of equipment, ability to work independently and their ability to work
in small groups.
|
Unit 2: Chemistry - Exploring Matter (22 hours)
|
Students
will conduct investigations into the properties of elements and compounds,
while focusing on laboratory and environmental safety.
|
Unit 3:Biology - Reproduction (22 hours)
|
This unit examines
societal impacts of reproductive technology, and enables students to
develop an understanding of sexual and asexual reproduction. Knowledge
of Cell Theory and mitosis will be expanded, and proper care of laboratory
equipment will be taught.
|
Unit 4: Physics - Electrical Applications (22
hours)
|
The concepts of static and current electricity will
be explored in this unit. Skills in using a variety of instruments will
be developed in order to gather qualitative and quantitative data.
|
Unit 5: Earth and Space - Space Exploration (22
hours)
|
Students will develop
observational skills outside the laboratory while studying space and
their place in the universe. Methods of space exploration and theories
on the origins of the universe will be discussed.
|
Unit 6: Making Connections (8 hours)
|
Summative assessment
tasks are conducted, aimed at assessing the goals of this Course. The
achievement chart for science is used as a guide in assessment.
