Prerequisite: Grade 10 Science (Academic or Applied)
Goals: Students
should be able to:
- Relate science technology, science, and the environment;
- Develop skills, strategies, and habits of mind required for scientific
inquiry;
- To understand basic concepts of science.
Unit #1:
Skills (5 hours)
This unit reviews knowledge and skills needed for this course, such as
the process of scientific inquiry.
Unit #2:
Everyday Chemicals (21 hours)
This unit focuses on the properties, benefits, and hazards of everyday
chemicals that are used within the home, the workplace, and industry. As
well, how these chemicals affect society and the environment, such as PCBs
and waste management.
Unit #3:
Body Input and Body Functions (21 hours)
In this unit students will learn about food components (i.e. nutrients;
enzymes) and their effects on body functions. Nutrition will be investigated
through a variety of subjects, including dietary log, fad diets, and eating
disorders.
Unit #4:
Science and Space (21 hours)
This unit will explore space environment, gravity and relative effects
on humans and existing technologies in space.
Unit #5:
Waste Management (21 hours)
This unit will look at the environmental effects of different types of
wastes and their management in industry and the community. Emphasis will
be placed on sewage treatment facilities.
Unit #6:
Technologies in Everyday Life (21 hours)
This unit is used to incorporate knowledge acquired from previous units
in this science course. Modern everyday technologies will be explored,
for example sewage treatment plants.

Expectations
1. Students should read their student handbook, and observe the practices
of this school.
2. Students should practice both safe and polite behaviour towards students
and staff in class.
3. Students are responsible for covering and caring for their textbook.
4. Sit at your desk, take out a pen and open your notes upon entering
the room.
5. When the lesson begins, remain silent unless recognized by the teacher.
During lessons, only one person should speak at a time. Raise your hand
if you wish to be recognized.
6. The teacher will dismiss students, not the bell.
7. No food or drink is permitted in the classroom.
8. No sitting on desk tops or lab benches.
9. Students are responsible for all missed work, and must get help from
other students and their teacher in order to make up this work.
